What is Play Therapy?

Play therapy is a psychotherapeutic technique that assumes play is the child’s way to communicate their experiences. It allows a child to naturally express their emotions and thoughts in a non-intrusive manner that side-steps the barrier that language can create for children who may not have to words to tell adults about their experiences. Play allows for growth, healing, thought and emotional expression, and coping through the manipulation of objects in a child’s world with little adult direction, thus allowing the child to gain a sense of autonomy and control. Through play, a therapist can help the child learn new ways of seeing the world, coping with their experiences, and communicating with others.
