Initial Intake Appointment

For Adults: The first appointment is called an initial intake appointment. I ask that you come 15-minutes before the scheduled time to complete the initial paperwork. I also ask you to bring in any relevant documentation. In the first meeting, I usually discuss confidentiality, who I am and the services I provide. Then I will ask you why you are coming in for therapy and what you want to gain from this experience. The most important goal for our first meeting is for you to decide if you are comfortable talking to me. If you are not comfortable with me or I think that someone else may be better able to help you, I will provide you with referrals to other mental health professionals.

For Children and Adolescents: The first appointment is called the inital intake appointment. I will ask the legal guardian(s) to come to the first session along with the prospective patient. I will ask the guardian to bring all the relevant documentation and paperwork as discussed on the phone. If there are multiple people involved we may break up the intake into two or three hour-long sessions. I will see the guardian for the first 20-30 minutes of the session and then I will meet with the child or teenager. I try to respect the rights of minors and guardians by clearly discussing my role, confidentiality, and boundaries.
